Christmas Time At Sarah's

We enjoyed spending Christmas with Sarah. She had a difficult time at first. Holiday's have always been hard for Sarah.
She told me that she really misses her sisters and her aunts and uncle. I told her that one day we would all be together again and celebrate the holiday's together.

I am amazed at how much she has grown. Yes, she still has melt downs from time to time, but she is getting better at communicating what is bothering her.

I remember the doctors telling us that she would probably never be able to communicate in a way we could understand and how she would never have facial expressions or be able to show affection in a proper way.

Hummmmm.....pictures are worth thousands of words. We had a great time :)

Thank you Sarah for inviting us over and thank you Monica for the wonderful meal you prepared for us :)

Our Outing With Sarah - So Proud of Her!

We visited Sarah the other day. We surprised her and she was so happy to see us.

She had been having a rough morning. She is not a morning person, she takes after me in that area.
She wanted to get some ice-cream. She was a little upset when she found out that the proper transportation was not available for her to go somewhere with us, but low and behold she was the one that came up with a plan as to how we could work around this situation. I was so proud of her working out this situation, using her problem solving skills in a verbal way. Soon we were all in aggreeance . We looked for a DQ, but all we found was a Baskin Robbins.
It took her a little bit to choose what she wanted. Even when she made her choice, it was like she wasn't happy with the choice she made. It didn't keep her from eating what she chose though :) I suppose she really wanted a blizzard.

She kept her behaviors under control as best as she could. She knows that if she is not safe then she has to go home right then.
When we got back to her place we told her that we had to do some more Christmas shopping for her and with that, she bade us a hasty retreat LOL. I guess she wants lots of presents LOL. We love you Sarah :)

Autism, Military Families and Christmas

I know what I have gone through, being a mother of a child diagnosed with Autism. I cannot imagine what it must be like for a single parent to raise an autistic child, or be a Military family with an autistic child.
My prayers go out to these brave and wonderful people!

Everyday for an Autistic individual is quite a struggle. They like routine and organization. What must it be like for a family that is constantly moving and changing? What kind of resources do the Military Families have for Autism?

As I have said before, the holidays are difficult for Sarah. What would it have been like if we had been in the Military? Or if I had been a single mom?
I hear more support for a single mom with a child with autism than I do for Military families. What if you are a single mom in the Military with a child diagnosed with Autism?
I don't have the answers but I do have prayers and  there are resources (not very many) out there that I feel led to share, in the hopes that it might help you brave and wonderful parents.
