Autism, Compassion and Empathy

When Sarah was diagnosed with Autism at age 2yrs. you know what I was told by someone? I was told that she would be like Spock from Star Trek as far as her emotions were concerned and that she would be unable to tell a lie.

After that remark I decided to research this Autism thing more and much to my astonishment was that there were books and articles saying the same thing about people diagnosed with Autism.
I could not believe it! Back then (1991) people really used Autism as a blanket covering type of diagnosis. If you were diagnosed with Autism then you had all of the same symptoms as all people diagnosed with Autism. Nobody really looked at the individual and realized that they are indeed an individual. They would just see Autism and expected you to behave like Spock.
Sarah never fit into the Spock category.
Sarah is high functioning. She has a wonderful sense of humor and even though she can be self centered and blunt she has enough compassion and empathy to regard your feelings. She is very clever and does try to manipulate things to go her way, but not at the expense of others and yes she can tell a lie but really prefers not to.
The movie Rainman put a whole new emphasis on Autism proving that people diagnosed with Autism are unique individuals.

Temple Grandin's movie further educates all of us on just how uniquely different we all are.
If we were all the same, this would be a very boring world!
